I've been reading quite a bit of memoir and autobiography in recent months for my course. I really feel for the parents, who don't often come off too well in this sort of writing. I tend to go with the line from the 'Savage Garden' song 'Affirmation': 'I believe your parents did the best job they knew how to do'.
